Level 1 - Basic phrases / The / Classroom Objects Let's start with some basics which you can't do without.
Le / La Nouns are things like people, places, objects, qualities and ideas. Some nouns you can touch, like a book, but some you can't touch, like freedom or happiness. In French nouns are either masculine (le) or feminine (la). Le and la mean 'the'.
L' When the noun begins with a vowel, the word for 'the' is l' - it does not matter whether it is masculine or feminine.
Les If we are talking about just one noun then the noun is singular. If there are more than one, the noun is plural. When we are talking about plural nouns, the word for 'the' is les - it does not matter whether it is masculine or feminine. Remember to put an 's' on the end of a plural noun just as we do in English. In French though, you don't pronounce the 's' - it is silent.
